Webb's images resolve galaxies as they appeared over 13 billion years ago, captured by folding a 6.5-meter gold-coated mirror into a rocket fairing and unfurling it a million miles from Earth.
Because Webb observes primarily in infrared, it can see through clouds of cosmic dust that block visible light, revealing stars and planetary systems still in the process of forming.
