Gaia BH1 was found not by seeing the black hole itself, but by tracking tiny, periodic shifts in the position of a nearby Sun-like star as it orbits an invisible object roughly 10 times the mass of the Sun.
At under a third of the distance to the previous record-holder, its discovery suggests our galaxy may host a much larger hidden population of quiet, non-feeding black holes than previously estimated.
